How do I accept debit and credit cards?

To accept debit and/or credit cards you will need a payment processor.

A payment processor is a company that manages the credit card transaction process, acting as a kind of mediator between the bank and the merchant.

To put it simply, the payment processor takes the information about your customers debit or credit card and checks it with the customers bank. Assuming the card is valid and there are enough funds then it deducts the money from your customers bank account and the transaction goes through.

The payment processor will then hold those funds for a few days and credit it to your bank account.
